Michelle Obama reveals why she didn't think Barack could become president: 'He Was A Black Man In America'

Former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed that she did not initially believe that her husband, Barack Obama, could have won the presidency in 2008.

Although she has already given her blessing, Mrs. Obama writes in her new memoir. She said she "was also feeding a painful thought: Barack was a black man in the United States, after all. I really did not think he could win.

Her fears were not appeased when she saw that Time magazine had presented to her husband, on the cover of her October 2006 issue, "Why could Barack Obama be the next president" and have she averted her gaze. The former first lady could not bear the idea that Obama became the elected leader of the nation.

Mrs. Obama said doubts about her husband's eligibility were rooted in the real and obscure history of racial segregation and slavery in the country. It made her nervous to dream of the small possibility that a black man could one day rule the United States.

"I think I did what a lot of blacks did," Obama said in an interview with Good Morning America, as he insisted on his skepticism about her husband's eligibility. "We were afraid to wait because it is hard to believe that one day the oppressed country could be led by you."

Mrs. Obama, descendant of a slave, said that her disbelief was a reflection of the apprehension of many black Americans of previous generations.

"My grandparents have been segregated," Obama added. "My grandfather, his grandfather was a slave, these memories were real, they did not believe the country was ready, my attitude was a reflection of that skepticism."

Throughout their campaigns and presidential mandates, Obama has often faced racist messages and threats. The most notable example of this xenophobic narrative is the "BIRther" plot around Obama, which President Donald Trump has amplified.

The conspiracy theory alleged that former Obama was born outside the United States. UU And, therefore, he was not eligible for the presidency. He appeared for the first time in 2008. In 2011, Mr. Trump began to argue the theory in television interviews when he presented the possibility of a candidacy for the presidency.

The former first lady said she could never "forgive" Mr. Trump for putting forward the discredited theory and endangering the safety of his family.

In addition, Mrs. Obama mentioned the anti-black rhetoric, as well as the skepticism surrounding her patriotism that was incredibly painful for her.

"I'm writing about those unpleasant moments in which people called me Barack's" baby mom, "Obama said," They accused me of not loving my country. said I was angry, and I thought, "It's not me. Wait, wait, people. That's not what I am. "
